Vancouver Coastal Health is looking for a Manager, Retail Food Services to lead the retail operations at Lions Gate Hospital. You will be responsible for the second largest retail site by revenue, overseeing the cafeteria, coffee shop, and catering services. We are looking for an experienced, hands-on leader who excels in operational management and team development, guiding an assistant manager and a dedicated team of cooks, receiver, and food service workers.
As a Manager, Food Operations with Vancouver Coastal Health you will:
- Be responsible and accountable for all aspects of the planning, organizing and directing management and staff and activities of food operations for designated site(s).
- Be responsible and accountable for developing, implementing and understanding policies and service standards, creating and leading key operational projects (as assigned) and supporting other colleagues with similar responsibilities.
- Oversee financial performance of the retail operations, including cash management, P&L accountability, budgeting, food costing, inventory control, and management of operational expenditures.
- Lead menu planning and development of various dining styles including but not limited to fast-casual to banquet style service and ensure high‑quality, cost‑effective offerings that can be executed seamlessly within available resources and budget parameters.
- Stay current with industry trends and lead special events, promotions, and seasonal programs to enhance customer engagement and drive revenue.
- Ensure consistent quality assurance across food service program and provides a positive guest experience by maintaining high standards of customer service, responsiveness, and service recovery when needed.
- Develop and implement operational efficiencies, including workflow optimization, waste reduction initiatives, and process improvements.
- Oversee scheduling, staffing levels, and labour optimization to balance service needs with financial targets.
- Monitor and analyze sales and traffic trends to identify opportunities for growth, menu enhancements, and improved profitability.
- Manage the maintenance, safe operation, and lifecycle planning of kitchen and food service equipment.
- Uphold and enforce all Food Safety and Physical Safety standards, protocols, and regulatory requirements.
- Hire, coach, mentor, and performance‑manage team members, fostering a positive, inclusive, and high‑performing workplace culture.
- Collaborate with site leadership and the Food Service Director to evaluate and adjust food service programming based on operational needs and customer feedback.
- Anticipate changes at the designated site/facilities that impact services, and plan and implement mitigating strategies.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, vendors, suppliers, site leaders, and internal departments to support effective operations and service excellence.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Baccalaureate in Food Service or Hospitality Management or Food, Nutrition, and Health from an accredited university and current registration with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC in Dietetics, Canadian Society of Nutrition Management (CSNM), or Red Seal Certification in Culinary Arts, supplemented by a minimum five (5) years’ recent, related working experience in a food operations management role in a health facility or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Knowledge & Abilities
- Demonstrated leadership ability and highly develops interpersonal and communication skills.
- Broad knowledge of health facility support service operations.
- Comprehensive knowledge in contract management, and cost/benefit analysis.
- Practical understanding of contract law and commercial terms & conditions.
- Extensive experience in managing partner/service provider relationships.
- Extensive experience in managing projects to achieve results.
- Broad knowledge of the BC Health Care Industry environment.
- Effective leadership and communication skills to foster a respectful and motivating environment.
- Competently utilizes spreadsheet and word processing applications at an intermediate to advanced level and has a comprehensive knowledge of computerized purchasing systems, including e-commerce applications.
- Strong analytical, organizational, communication, interpersonal and administrative skills.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
